Tips For Singles on Surviving (And Enjoying) The Holidays. Chocolate Wedding Favors.

Here you are, facing the holiday season alone. Have you been thinking about?

*how alone and lonely you feel

*excuses you can give family members as to why you can't come this year

*what friends may be available to spend those long days with

*how another year has passed and you are (still) single

*how unfair it is that everyone else seems so happy and connected

*how you will handle the office holiday party- single, take a friend, not attend

*going to a far away (tropical?) place to escape it all

*hiding out, alone, in your own home

If these thoughts sound familiar it is probably time to reflect on your feelings regarding this holiday season. If your goal is to hide out and endure it alone, you won't need to do too much planning. However, if you wish to experience at least a measure of the "peace and joy" associated with this time of year, you need to make and follow through with plans that allow you to participate in ways that are meaningful to YOU.

Remember, your senses are bombarded from October to December with music, images and Hallmark verses depicting the "right" experiences and expressions for the season. Remind yourself, every day if necessary, that there's nothing wrong with being single. You have the same need and right to enjoy this season as any couple or family does. How you choose to do this is up to you.

After you have done some serious reflection, consider the following list of holiday tips designed especially for singles.

Don't make plans out of a sense of obligation. This is also your holiday season. Set limits, make good choices and enjoy. You may ask yourself; "do I really want to go out"? If so, make your next question something like; "does it sound like something I would enjoy or be interested in?" Or, "will I have the opportunity to meet and mix with other singles?"

Avoid unrealistic expectations from others, from yourself and from the holidays themselves. Relax, enjoy and don't expect so much that you will feel hurt or disappointed when things don't turn out just as you had imagined. This will defeat all the positive feelings and experiences that you may have already gained.

Make sure you give thanks for all the blessings you do have in your life. Focusing on what you don't have only encourages negative thoughts. Add a prayer of hope for the things you would like to work for in the coming year.

Don't overbook OR overstay a good amount of time with relatives/friends. Sometimes a shorter stay works best and leaves you energy and space to get back to your own home and decompress.

Look for ways to give to or do for others. Feeling useful and appreciated will provide a great boost to your holiday spirits. Check into volunteer opportunities at local shelters and nursing homes or through any local church or non-profit group.

Don't plan to spend the entire holiday season with married /coupled family and friends. Seek out other singles and singles groups/ activities where you can feel relaxed and able to share with folks you have more in common with at this time. Better yet, plan a get together with other singles for one of the holidays. A festive potluck meal, tree trimming party or other holiday event would probably be much appreciated.

Do avoid using food, alcohol or drugs to cope with holiday stress. Nothing is worse than the feelings that follow the use (or wrong use) of these things. This way of coping leads to depression, low self-esteem and a greater sense of isolation and despair.

Do decorate your home with any and all things that make it feel more festive and fun for YOU. Tune into all those wonderful traditions you grew up with. It does not have to be very costly or time consuming to begin your own traditions in your own place. Don't put off or deny yourself those happy holiday expressions, as you wait for your significant other. Make your life all it can be right now.

Consider emphasizing the more spiritual aspects of the holiday. Go to a concert featuring religious holiday music or attend a church (or other) service, (even better with a friend).

Finally, going away to an exotic place may be just what you do need. Look into tour or vacation packages for singles. This may provide plenty of rest and relaxation and help you meet new friends and develop new interests.

Whatever you decide to do for your holidays, have fun and enjoy them. Focus on taking care of yourself and doing what is right for you. This way you will also be giving your best to those around you. Happy Holidays!

A home equity loan is a loan based on the difference between what your current home value is and what you currently owe on your house. There are also mortgage companies that will loan a little over the equity you have in your home. They can usually do this safely because most homes appreciate in value over time.

If you have credit card debt at a high interest rate, or even at an average rate, you may want to consider getting a home equity loan to consolidate your credit card debt for a few reasons.

When we hear the word "conditioning," many of us are reminded of Pavlov and his work with dogs. Over 100 years ago, Ivan Pavlov published his efforts on what he termed "conditioned reflex." Through conditioning of repeated external actions, he was able to get a dog to drool without feeding the dog.

Pavlov demonstrated that external responses can condition animals and this is true of human beings. Think back to your earliest school days when you sat in your classrooms. You learned that sitting up front near the teacher's desk resulted in you receiving more attention (external action). Students in the back of the room appeared not to be called upon as much and were not under the "eye" of the teacher. Within a few years, you were conditioned that sitting in the front was not as desirable as sitting in the back. This "classical conditioning" stayed with you even as an adult. Have you ever attended a conference, seminar or large meeting where very few adults sat in the front and the majority of adults sat between the middle and back of the room?

Another prime example of early conditioning centers around the parent/child relationship. Since parents are concerned about their children's health and welfare, the word "No" is quite prevalent in the early childhood years. We all have heard some, if not all, of the following expressions: "Don't write on the walls," "Don't run into the street," "Don't speak to strangers" and "Don't go to where you are not wanted or ask." As we become a little older, we are conditioned to receive a consequence for our failure to obey the "Don'ts". Many of us can remember that consequence as "Wait until your father gets home." This early conditioning turns us from "Don't" children into "Can't adults."

Again as adults, we carry this negative conditioning into our daily lives. For example, what is the number one fear for over 50% of all salespeople including budding entrepreneurs and small business owners? Cold calling or talking to strangers. Picking up the phone and dialing a complete stranger activates two of our earliest childhood "Don'ts." Don't talk to strangers and Don't go where you are not wanted.

Another example of conditioning is taking tests. During the last 5 years, I have surveyed hundreds of adults where 80% or more believe that they are poor test takers. This belief started in school where they probably didn't do well on tests (external) action. As the years progress, this external stimulus created stress and anxiety. Mention the word test and some adults respond physically through increased heart beats to perspiration. Until the adults recognize that part of the reason, not necessarily all of the reason, for poor testing resides in their belief through conditioning that they are poor test takers, they will continue to be poor test takers.

For me, conditioning is very apparent specific to "medical shots." As a child, I was very sickly and had monthly, if not weekly, shots from our doctor who had that time made house calls. I remember one Christmas Eve that my mother and the doctor chased me around the house to give me another shot. To this day, fifty years later, I have a very difficult time around taking shots. Overcoming those early years of conditioning, is still a challenge. However, I recognize the reason for this fear and, thank heavens, no longer have to be chased around the room.

The examples of conditioning are too many for just one article. However, understanding that conditioning still continues in our lives is the first step to overcome what I call the "Don't Fears of Misery and Scarcity" By looking as to why we fear something, we may discover that the fear was created years ago from our early childhood experiences. Now as adults, we can then take the appropriate actions to overcome those "Don't Fears of Misery and Scarcity" and embrace "Joy and Abundance."

One of the best actions is to change those conditioned behaviors is to adopt the following belief: I will receive what I believe. By believing that I will receive the joy and abundance, I will receive what I believe. Today, I use this positive self-talk statement or affirmation to continue to overcome the affects of childhood conditioning and thereby improving my performance. You, too, can defeat your own "Don't Fears" and create a life filled with joy and abundance. The choice is yours.

The drive towards the Drakensberg Mountains swept over the undulating foothills down side-roads that snake along meandering countryside to our first destination Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. Cleopatra is tucked away in the beautiful Kamberg valley in the Drakensberg Mountains, it is a gourmet getaway where attention to detail is evident everywhere. The dining room and lounge are extended over a trout-filled dam that looks out across the water to the stunning mountains of the Southern Berg. It is a magical place - a secluded luxury hideaway where the most important factor is not to come here if you are on a diet!

itself with all the guests meeting at 7pm for drinks and given an entertaining, detailed account of the gourmet meal that was to follow by Richard the chef and owner. Everything is hand prepared on the premises, some of the sauces (the highlight of most plates) take up to three days in creation. It's three fabulous starters each, in our case a plate of meltingly succulent scallops, then a rich, baked butternut soup with a dollop of creamy pesto and a plate of Mozambican king prawns. A small freshening sorbet provided Richard the time for final preparations of the main course, an elaborate plate of choice lamb cuts on rosti with three different chutneys, and rounded off with a rich chocolate concoction, perfectly offset by homemade orange-infused vanilla ice cream.

Breakfast the next morning followed in a similar style and although difficult to leave we knew that we had to walk some of this food off or we would never make the next meal. That food was possibly the best I have ever eaten but seriously doubt having survived 2 days of this non stop eating.

Kamberg hosts a site of Bushman rock art with relative easy access, a stunning walk including a waterfall, and particularly well preserved examples of Bushman paintings. It is here that the "Rosetta Stone" of San art first provided archaeologists with the key to interpreting the symbolism of the paintings as spiritual in content - showing how hunters gained power from the animals that they killed. Its all professionally explained by guides and although I had seen these paintings before I was again moved.

The road to our next stop the Antbear turned out to be just a little hop away mainly because Richard had guided us via the back roads. The Antbear Guest House is one of those seldom found gems hidden away in a network of rural roads in the Drakensberg foothills. The little white washed farmhouse has been converted into a place of artistic elegance.

It is full of hand sculptured wooden furniture, a labor of Conny and Andrews love. Andrew greeted us dressed in very flamboyantly African dress and welcomed us with a cup of tea. He is a humorous character with a passion for entertaining, conversation and alternative living.

Andrew is a dab hand in the kitchen too. The food is very different to that of Cleopatra definitely not as rich but no less of an experience. Supper was the best Indian food I have ever eaten with a selection of curries, papdams, onion badjis, sambals and naan bread to boot. Andrew quite likes the company in the kitchen and its really different watching this kind of cooking. Its like a circus as he casually juggles the egg turner or adds a handfull of spice to some frying onions. The hosts eat with the guests at a single table with candle chandeliers and a fireplace. Its very welcoming indeed. For desert Andrew whipped up caramelized cape gooseberries in whiskey with hint of time. Why the Antbear is so affordable is a bit of a mystery me and till today the Antbear is my favourite guesthouse anywhere. Armed with Conny's picnic lunch setoff to Giants Castle Nature Reserve. Giants Castle is a spectacular part of the Drakensberg and one of my favorite regions. Its has less tourism than most other parts and I have always wondered why as it is about as beautiful as it comes. We wanted an easy walk so opted for Worlds View a 14 km trail with a spectacular 360�½ view at its end.

We had lunch and soaked in the views and got back to Giants Castle Camp in time for a well-earned cappuccino and piece of cheesecake.Dinner back at the Antbear turned out to be a Moroccan evening. Again the food was excellent. Andrews advice and enthusiasm inspires confidence and we reorganised some of our plans The following day was supposed to be a visit to the battlefields but I had forgotten about the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Andrew arranged tickets for us and this is really something not to be missed under any circumstances. The day was spent in the Champagne Valley another beautiful part of the Drakensberg.

For dinner Andrew had taken the Zulu line. An interesting stew with a type of dumpling bread baked in the same pot. Butternut and maize meal and some wild spinach added a touch of colour. What I have never seen before was the wild asparagus saut�½ed in lemon and butter with a hint of sesame oil. I start to drool even thinking about that now.

The next morning was a guided horse trail through the Drakensberg foothills. I am not a horse enthusiast normally but with such relaxed horses I would not have missed it for anything. It was just before lunch we headed of to Montusi Montusi a bit like a hotel with a personal country cottage feeling about it. The lodge is perfectly positioned to catch the surrounding view, fields of galloping horses and lakes to fish in. The food here too is excellent perhaps not as unexpectly different as the Antbear but our lamb with chargrilled lemon and mint was perfect.

Our last day in these mountains was spent walking the Tugela Gorge Walk below the Amphitheatre in the Royal Natal National Park. It took us to the base of the Tugela Falls, where the Tugela River plunges 948m (3,109 ft.) from the plateau, its combined drop making it the second highest falls in the world, and afforded us marvelous views of the Amphitheatre.

Our trip back to Durban guided us through the Midlands Meander a place I find to be over rated unless you make the effort to pick out the gems that it does offer. We stopped at Marakesh Israeli Goats Cheese for a glass of wine and some cheese tasting. A perfect light snack after that lovely drive to get here. Our next stop took us passed the Karkloof Falls to the Karkloof Canopy tour.a unique eco-experience that takes people on a 3-hr adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest. The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30m above the forest floor.

It was five thirty when we arrived back at my flat in Durban. We were all tired but satisfied with our week in the Drakensberg Mountains. I know that this region offers much more and far greater extremes but for us it was a perfect balance of natural beauty, good living and just a little excitement.

Which is better for learning - the textbook, or the workbook of exercises and exams that goes with it? Most of us would answer that neither is better - you need both to really learn the subject being taught. Mother Teresa taught us by example how to tend and love equally the worst refuse of mankind. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave us instruction on non-violent alternatives to revolution. Jesus, Buddha and Mohammad provided stories, sermons, insight and wisdom to help guide us in our days. These people (and others like them) have been our textbooks - providing us with the guidance, the information and the knowledge we need to make choices about how we live.

Back to our children: All children need exercise and they are naturally full of energy. Look at any other species, and you will see the same behavior. Should we drug our dogs, cats, and parrots, when they display youthful exuberance?

Children have to run, jump, and shout. So let them play in the back yard, in a park, and get them involved in sports, Yoga, dance, or martial arts. You will never regret letting your child enjoy life, constructively learn in the process, and just be a kid.

For all of us, there is a time to be quiet and a time to shout. Children need years to learn this, so let's keep them active in the process. Keep them away from the television, Internet, and video games, except for "rainy days."

Coloring books, board games, and reading are also good activities for rainy days.

A heavy bag is a great tool for letting anger out. You and your child can use it together. You can learn to punch and kick it, for the aerobic benefits, as well. If you have a friend who is a boxer or martial artist, you could get some pointers. After just a 20-minute session, I guarantee you, and your child, will have dealt with anger - there will be little, if any, left.

Teach your child forgiveness, through your own example. I am not asking you to let people "walk all over you." However, let grudges go; life is really too short to keep a feud going.

You can also control your child's "circle of friends," just by getting him or her involved in, group activities such as: League sports, dance, yoga, or martial arts. The parents who have their children in these activities want the best for them and are willing to sacrifice their time, or money, to get it.

This will keep your child busy, happy, and active, with a pre-selected crowd of friends, who have parents that care. This is a "win - win" situation and well worth the investment.

This is not to say that every child you run into, at these functions, will be perfect, but in the above mentioned activities, all of them are structured, adult-supervised, and rules for behavior are in place. This form of organization becomes a habit, your child will follow these guidelines, and bring them home.

Here is another idea that will help. Have your child take care of a pet or a plant, every day. Children love to care for animals or plants, but they still need supervision. The result of this will be, your child learns compassion.

Compassion will keep anger "in check" every time.

If you are redesigning or decorating a room, or house, care has to be taken where your piece of art is to be displayed. Even if you have bought a picture on impulse there are a few tips that will not only enhance the picture but its surroundings.

As a good rule of thumb it is good to hang a picture so that its centre is roughly at eye level. If you have a grouping of pictures then also the centre of the group should be at approximate eye level.

Wall size.

For a narrow wall go for a smaller picture, or group of small pictures.
For large walls go for the larger pictures.
For walls that link to a low ceiling go for pictures that are vertically longer as this will help give the illusion that the ceiling is higher and open the room up.

Picture framing.

As a guide neutral coloured, plain or soft /delicate paintings will suit a more basic plain frame.
Dramatic pictures may deserve a much bolder frame.
Will the frames go together if pictures are hung in a group?

Picture grouping.

If you intend to hang more than one picture in a group then layout the pictures first, maybe on the floor to get a good idea as how they will interact. Bear in mind the layout and furniture in the proposed area as this may influence how you want the pictures laid out.

If you know someone who has the layout of their home you love, get their opinion on your choice and layout. They will be flattered.

As a final tip - try to keep pictures away from bright sunshine, as they will fade over a period of time.

Positioning your pictures is not a science, but a bit of planning and attention will no doubt give you years of joy.

And it's really a surprisingly efficient way to bring in traffic.

Hopefully you're not saying "But I don't have any articles". If you don't, and are serious about wanting traffic, then get some. Either write them yourself, or have them 'ghostwritten' for you. It is amazingly inexpensive to do this, and the benefit is priceless, and non-stop.

The most well-known place to have articles written 'on the cheap' is http://www.elance.com

You must believe me when I say that the benefits are endless. Most of us start out reluctant to spend a lot of time posting articles, but when we finally become convinced of the value of the extra traffic, we become believers. Then we kick ourselves for not doing it sooner.

Here's How it Works:

Let's say that your web site is about Affiliate Marketing, as mine is. You need to become known as an expert in your field.

The best way to do this is by having articles on your content-based web site telling all you can about affiliate marketing techniques.

People can read them, and even more significantly, they can post them on their own web site, or even use them in their email newsletters. Well how does that help you? Simple.. your name and resource box is at the end of every article, and people will surf over to visit your site from that.

That is how you get extra traffic.

Do all those who read your articles visit your site? Of course not. In fact, only about 3% of readers may visit. This is quite normal, but it does eventually snowball into significant numbers. Here's How.

When people use your articles on their web sites or ezines, they must also maintain the credits and respect the copyrights of the author. I felt really honoured when I discovered that some of my articles were used the day after I posted them. And you only discover a very few places that your work is used. Most of the time, you can't know.

The first Directory I posted articles to is Ezine Articles at http://EzineArticles.com/ which is the fastest growing of all of them. By logging in to my members page, I can view how many times each article has been read. What I can't see is how many times people borrowed my articles, and how many times they were read in that new place, etc, etc.

Can you see how significant this all can be?

One more important point is the question of how long the articles should be. My personal preferences are 800 to 1,400 words. However, 500 to 1,000 is an acceptable range. In fact, if you have a 2,000 word article, you should split it up into 2 parts. That way you get the advantage of one extra page of visibility.

Finally, there is the question of how many directories you should post to.

You need to be aware, that posting articles can be a very time consuming exercise. For that reason, it may be best to test many, but only use a few. The more popular ones are usually better organized and permit article posting in an easy way. Ths includes previewing it before posting it with errors.

Currently, I post to 5 directories but have rejected more th an 20 that were such a drag to use, that I gave up on them. On the easy ones to post to, I can get in and out in less than 5 minutes for one article.

PS: What is shocking to discover is that every directory has it's certain type of reader with differing tastes. An article read 50 times on one directory may be read 200 to 300 times in another one. And the reverse also happens for a different article subject, when comparing the same directories. Instead of 50 and 300, it could be 300 and 50.

This proves that you must post to several directories. Probably 10 to 15 is the most you need. Even 5 is good, but 10 is better. If you change headlines and a paragraph or two, then that can be also good. Let the search engines find you more often that way.

I don't have enough articles posted yet, but I slowly add more every week or so. My primary target is 25 to 35 articles, and eventually 100 articles.

You might ask, "What about fruit?" Many people think of fruit as a great diet food. How often do you see someone having a plateful of fruit for lunch? Remember that fruit contains fructose, a natural sugar responsible for the sweetness of the fruit. It's important to know that just because it's natural, doesn't necessarily mean it's alright to eat it. It works the same way as any sugar. Now, we know that fruit contains many vitamins and minerals and should be a part of your food plan. However, if you are trying to lose weight, you need to keep your fruit consumption low, focusing on those fruits that contain less sugar, such as apples, pears and most berries.

Now, I don't want to leave you thinking that you can never again have sugar. Even while you are losing weight, there is one time that, if you must, you can give yourself permission to eat sugar. That time is immediately following an INTENSE training session. But be sure the session is intense because working hard will deplete your body of its glycogen stores (that's the name for sugar stored in your cells and liver for energy). Your body can store only a small amount at a time so it is possible to deplete it during an intense workout.

But don't overdo it. Remember, while you are in a weight-loss mode, you need to be particularly careful with what you put in your body.

Moving into the realm of the imagination is not to be feared, but anticipated with awe and wild abandonment. Fear not the power you possess. Develop your imagination, exercise it, and use it effectively to manifest the physical things that you desire in your life. Imagine the life that your really want and begin to live it.

How familiar does the following sound? Your computer was working fine, but then suddenly started locking up (aka hanging or freezing), rebooting itself (crashing) or shutting down spontaneously? If you know only too well what I am talking about, then read on! Performing the simple steps below can fix the majority of lockup cases.

1. Check for recently installed software or hardware.
If the lockups started to happen after you installed a new peace of hardware, new software program, or new drivers, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

2. Run your antivirus program.
One of the first things to do in the case of sudden lockups is to run your antivirus program. Check your antivirus manufacturer's website for updates and latest virus definition files. (This is absolutely necessary, outdated antivirus is not going to be of any use!) If you don't have antivirus software installed - or if updates are unavailable - run one of the web-based antivirus scans that some major antivirus vendors like Trend Micro are offering for free. You can find a comprehensive list of available web-based scans and free antivirus programs on http://www.free-antivirus.info.

3-->3-->3. Run some good spyware removal tool.
If your machine is not infected with any viruses, it is still possible that it has some harmful adware or spyware is present. Download and run some good spyware removal tool such as AdAware or Microsoft AntiSpyware. Check http://www.free-antivirus.info for a list of free spyware removal applications.

4. Check for free hard drive space.
When no viruses are found, check out free hard drive space on drive C:. Make sure there is more than 20% of free space available; low disk space can lead to random lockups.

5. Check for overheating.
Overheating is another known cause of lockups. It can be caused by problems with fans inside the case, dust buildup, or other cooling problems. Make sure the power supply fan and CPU fan are running and free of dust buildup. You can check the temperatures inside the case by running Motherboard monitor http://mbm.livewiredev.com - make sure the temperatures are within the preset limits. Be very careful while cleaning inside the computer case (use plastic vacuum crevice tool) and NEVER OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY CASE as it contains high voltage.

6. Check the hard disk.
Check the hard disk - it is possible that its logical structure is corrupted. To check the disk for errors, right-click on the disk C: icon in "My Computer", select the "Tools" tab, check all check boxes in the "Check disk options" field, and press the "Check now" button. It should ask whether you want to schedule the check next time you restart your computer - answer "Yes" and restart your PC. The check will be performed automatically after startup; it can take a while, so be patient. The program will attempt to fix some problems automatically - however, if the hard disk is failing physically, it will need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter (located in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to optimize data placement on the hard disk for increased performance and reliability.

7. Check the memory.
Sometimes random lockups can be attributed to the computer memory (RAM) starting to fail. You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM (pull it out and plug it back in). If it doesn't work, replace the defective RAM.

8. Check for other hardware problems (advanced users).
More hardware-related problems can be diagnosed by running hardware tests from the Ultimate Boot CD that can be downloaded from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used inappropriately (for example, some of them can wipe the contents of your hard disk).

9. Update Windows and drivers.
Some lockups can be caused by outdated software components - update your windows and drives by running a windows update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it's good idea to run it regularly).

The above steps will help diagnose and eliminate the most common causes of lockups. Hundreds more of other possible scenarios need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as it all goes down to your particular computer configuration. Asking on PC troubleshooting forums/newsgroups should help you figure out solutions to not-so-obvious lockup cases.

Success is a learning process. It's an ongoing process - a continual quest.

Do you believe that marketing success is a learning process? Then you must be willing to accept that you'll stumble (i.e., fail) along the way - sometimes a whole lot. But if you're willing to pay attention to what works and what doesn't, you can learn from your mistakes. You can fail your way to success!

I hear it all the time from clients as well as other small business owners. "When I put this marketing piece out, it really has to be good. I really need to get it right."

Really? Why is that? I mean if you weren't very good at marketing to begin with, then why does your next piece have to be so good?

What is wrong with making it as good as you think you can and putting it out there? Even if it's not a rousing success you should be able to learn from the experience.

Fear of Failure is such a powerful obstacle to achieving great marketing success. Too often it's what keeps us from realizing that it is absolutely possible for our own small business.

We are taught in school that failure is bad. For a lot of us growing up, that meant anything less that an 80% (certainly less than a 70%) was failure. I know it kept me motivated most of the time.

Then when we get into business, we tend to think some of these same rules apply. And when we fail (or at least we think we fail) with our ideas and our marketing, it's devastating. Failure is bad. We fear it. We don't ever have to want to go through it again.

Fear of Failure can be paralyzing. You might assume that the best way to not fail is to not take a chance in the first place. Ah, but then doing nothing is a sure path to failure. What are you to do?

Be Willing To Fail Your Way To Marketing Success

Failure really isn't bad at all - well at least not if you are willing to learn from it. What if you simply thought of all of your marketing as testing? No, I'm not talking about like those tests back in school where you had to score 80% or higher to succeed.

Let me illustrate with an example.

Simple letters, direct mail, mail order, offline marketing

Say you send out 100 direct sales letters and only get two responses. A 2% response rate on a direct sales letter is not necessarily failure. In fact, it may be great success. The value of one or two new clients usually far outweighs the time and costs of producing and mailing the letter - especially if you consider the lifetime value of the client.

But only getting two responses out of 100 sure does feel like failure to many small business owners. Now do you realize that a simple change in your headline or your offer could increase response by over 500%? That's the power of testing. You put it out there and pay attention to what happens. Then you look for the opportunities to increase your results.

I'm not suggesting that you just start throwing your stuff out there to see what takes. Your marketing should be planned and part of an overall coordinated effort. If you follow any of KPD Marketing's work, you know how important I believe analysis and preparation are to success.

No, what I'm suggesting by failing your way to success is a willingness to put your marketing out there and test to see what happens. As long as you're willing to pay attention to (and accept) what works and what doesn't, you can learn what you are doing right and wrong. Then simply refine it and test it again.

Test and Test and Test Some More!

Does anybody think the Wright brothers got it right the first time? Of course they didn't. In fact, we know they tested and failed for years. Even their first real flight would be considered a colossal failure by today's standards. But the Wright brothers kept on testing to continue improving upon what they achieved each time.

The same is true for some of the most successful marketing businesses today. Don't think for a second that their first ideas and first marketing strategies worked flawlessly. They had failures. Some had several failures. Some had major failures.

The Secret to Failing Your Way To Success...

If you fail, you learn. When you learn, you can refine. When you refine, you can test again and eventually you will succeed.

Now, in order to learn from your failures, you must monitor and track your results. You might think you know what's working and what's not, but if you're not tracking anything then I'd be willing to challenge your notions.

Testing and tracking is really not as hard as you might think. It is important to take time to reflect on your failed experiences. What went right and wrong and where could you do things differently to garner different results next time?

Clarify your most wanted response. When you are putting together any marketing piece, or marketing tool, or marketing campaign; determine and be clear about your objective. What do you most want to happen? What is your most desired response?

So often business owners put something together, but they can't clearly articulate what they thought should happen as a result. There is no way to measure or monitor if it worked if you were not sure what was supposed to happen in the first place.

It is not the failure that defines us, but how we respond to failure. We all fail sometimes. Get over it. Don't be afraid of it. Pick yourself up and learn from the experience so you can move forward again.

You just need to be willing to Fail your way to great marketing Success!

Many trainers are "part-time" trainers by evening, used car salesmen by day. Find someone who has made a career out of fitness. It shows that they are more committed to their chosen field. How many part time neuro-surgeons do you see out there?

2. What is your basic philosophy on fitness?

First of all, if the trainer can actually spell the word philosophy, they get extra points! Okay, that was mean. You want to see where they are coming from. Do they think you should avoid squatting because it makes your legs look too big? Run for the hills as fast as you can. If they base their philosophy on meeting the client where they are fitness-wise, and they tend to take a more "holistic" approach to fitness, they might be worth working with. Holistic can have negative connotations in my book... I'm thinking of some "guru" who also wants to be your spiritual guide--not THAT holistic, okay? Just someone who takes into account your HEALTH as well as your appearance. I personally tell clients that I am more interested in their health first. Putting looks first is putting the cart before the horse, as it were. You can take shortcuts for appearance, and they aren't always healthy, and never permanent. If you get healthy, you will feel good and you will look great as a side-effect.

3. What is your background/education?

It helps to know that your trainer is qualified. A piece of paper doesn't give them that by itself, but it certainly helps give them credibility if they have made that level of commitment. If they have spent 4 years in college or more in grad school then they are hopefully well prepared. Don't let this

be the only criteria by which you select your trainer, because there are still trainers out there with impressive educational credentials that can't train their way out of a wet paper bag. This is just one of many important things that they should have if they are going to be your personal trainer. On top of that, what other background do they have? How long have they been at this? You want someone with experience preferably, but that doesn't mean you should rule out young new trainers all together. If they have a good education and they are trying to make a name for themselves, that may put them in your price range, and you may end up with a really great trainer.

4. Are you certified and with whom?

Don't even waste your time with them if they aren't serious enough about training to bother getting certified. Just like the education, the certification doesn't make the trainer, but if they don't have the inclination to at least get some kind of professional association, then they are worth even finishing the interview. If they are certified, check to see if it is a nationally recognized certification, like NSCA, ACE, ACSM, NFPT, AFAA, etc. An especially good certification is the CSCS, which you can only get from NSCA, but it can only be attained if you have a degree in a fitness related field. I personally have met some pretty impressive trainers with the CSCS, and it is becoming the gold standard in the industry.

5. What is your style/approach to clients?

Find someone who listens (VERY important). If they spend more time telling you about how many pro bodybuilders they have trained, or dropping big names of celebrity clients, rather than gathering information about you to figure out how they can best help you achieve your goals, politely tell them that you are very impressed, and that you will call them when you make a decision. Also, generally avoid the trainers who use the whole military schtik. Some people need a drill-sergeant. MOST don't. If they are a retired green-beret and you are a working mom, you may not be too compatible with them. Most people would just like someone who is motivated and conscientious. You can push people and not accept excuses without being an overbearing ass. You will know pretty early in the interview if they will make your workout all about them, or all about you. Don't just settle for some soft-speaking trainer who is afraid to make you work either. You aren't going to reach your goals without EFFORT!

6. (This question is for yourself) Does your potential trainer LOOK like they practice what they preach?

Don't settle for some trainer who is sporting a substantial gut. This seems like a no-brainer, but somehow those trainers still manage to sucker people into training with them. They don't have to look like escapees from the cover of Mens Health or Shape, but they ought to have some nice muscle tone. It doesn't hurt anything if they are pleasant to look at though. They may possess the right information in their heads, but if they are too easy on themselves for their nutritional or exercise shortcomings, then they may roll over when you tell them you are tired instead of demanding those last 3-5 reps. The same can go the opposite direction. You don't want someone who is completely obsessed and narcissistic either. If your female trainer is 5'1", 102 pounds, and packing a DDD under a way-too-revealing sport bra, or your male trainer is 5'6" and 250 pounds of lean, corregated steel, overtanned, and shaved head to toe, you are better off without. People like that are so out of balance in their own lives that they just don't have any business trying to teach you how to get healthy.

to read your palm, or name-drop the entire time, they are just freaks and should be taken out to the streets, beaten, and then dragged behind a high-speed gasoline truck spitting sparks out of the exhaust before they ruin what little good name we personal trainers have left. If they listen, respond with confidence that can only be gained with education and experience, and talk to you about REALISITIC expectations, then you are on the right track. Good luck!
